Introduction

We're hiring a Director of Business Development for our utilities client to join their team! You will be responsible for identifying, developing, and executing growth opportunities for the Corporation's clean energy portfolio across Ontario. This role focuses on originating and advancing new generation projects as well as repowering, redeveloping, and acquiring generation assets.

What are you going to do

  • Identify, plan, and prepare business cases for new clean energy development opportunities, strategic partnerships, investments, acquisitions, and operation & maintenance services.
  • Evaluate opportunities to repower or redevelop existing generation assets, including hydro and solar facilities, and other applicable assets within the Corporation's portfolio.
  • Assess project alignment with evolving IESO procurement and funding programs, including anticipated opportunities commencing in 2026.
  • Support due diligence activities related to potential generation asset acquisitions.
  • Lead or support the negotiation of commercial agreements with energy off-takers, development partners, vendors, contractors, funding agencies, and municipal or Indigenous partners.
  • Identify potential governmental and non-governmental funding sources, assess eligibility, and support the preparation and submission of funding applications.
  • Research, analyze, and articulate market conditions, customer requirements, competitive dynamics, and emerging industry trends.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including energy off takers (e.g., IESO), regulators, local distributors and transmitters, municipal and Indigenous communities, vendors, contractors, funding agencies, and industry associations.
  • Assess capabilities, technical strengths, costs, warranties, and commercial terms of vendors, contractors, and development partners.
  • Develop and implement a marketing and brand strategy for the Corporation's services, including campaigns and client-facing materials.
  • Represent the Corporation's interests through communication and coordination with internal teams, external stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and community partners.
  • Provide strategic guidance to management and staff on the negotiation and administration of major commercial and sales contracts.
  • Support the project management team in planning, scheduling, budgeting, regulatory approvals, procurement, contracting, construction, and execution of development, expansion, repowering, and redevelopment projects.
  • Oversee the implementation of major projects and programs to ensure alignment with approved business cases and strategic objectives.
  • Direct staff with respect to applicable legislative, regulatory, and policy requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required in support of the Corporation's business development, funding, and growth objectives.

Essential skills and knowledge 

  • 10 years of progressive experience in business development, project development, strategy, or commercial leadership within the energy, utilities, infrastructure, or clean technology sectors.
  • Direct experience with repowering, redevelopment, or acquisition of generation assets
  • Experience securing governmental and non-governmental funding, including grants, incentives, and other structured financing programs.
  • Experience leading or supporting contract negotiations, including power purchase agreements, development agreements, and major vendor contracts.
  • Understanding of Ontario's electricity market, including IESO market structures, procurement programs, regulatory frameworks, and policy drivers.
  • Solid knowledge of clean energy technologies, including technical, operational, and commercial considerations for battery storage, wind, hydro, solar, etc.
  • Strong understanding of IESO market rules, procurement processes, and funding mechanisms, with specific expertise in preparing successful funding and procurement submissions for new and emerging programs.
  • Familiarity with project development lifecycles, including site selection, feasibility studies, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Excellent written, presentation, and negotiation skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical and commercial concepts
  • Valid driver's license.
